I bought this printer to use with my MAC mini and I’ve had nothing but problems. Only the top 2 inches of any document containing a graphic (or a PDF) will print. I’ve been online for 3 weeks with HP and they still can’t figure out how to fix the problem.

This printer was exactly what I needed. It was fully functional and very clean.

Over the years I have purchased many printers by different manufacturers, and and am now locked in on HP. I have an Officejet Pro, a 3 in 1, and this new one for my wife. They are reliable, easy to maintain, and it’s cool when you print out multiple page documents they are printed in order starting with page one when you pull them out.

I bought this printer because of the good reviews it got. However, it turns out this is NOT a good printer for color photos at all. It’s OK if you are doing only text printing. The color photos are worse than the ones by my HP-722 it replaced — you can go crazy adjusting the color by trial-and-error … and use a lot of ink and photo paper. Also, there is no catch tray for the documents as they come out, and more often than not they just fall on the floor. It has problems printing envelopes, too, even the common business size. The first time I tried, it stopped like it was out of paper. I hit reset and it printed the envelope, but it didn’t print straight; the text was skewed. I thought this was because it interrupted the print, but it was skewed on subsequent envelopes that weren’t interrupted.

For color photo printing I plan to take my pictures to a professional service; it’s cheaper. This printer will be just for text. My next printer will not be an HP.

Update #1: I have recently printed an 8X10 photo, and it too came out skewed. Another problem with this printer is the same problem I’ve had with every hp ink-jet printer I’ve owned: no matter how much you try to adjust the margins, they always come out unequal.

Update #2: Although it was designed to print on both sides of a sheet, it fails this miserably because the lousy pick-up mechanism sometimes picks up two sheets of paper. To do two-sided printing, you have to print the odd pages first and then take out all the remaining blank paper and feed the printed sheets in manually one-at-a-time. Even if you want to do one-sided, it sometimes will pick up two sheets and the print will appear part on one sheet and part on the other.

I just finished setting this guy up. It took about an hour and, as with so many devices these days, the boxed instructions were no help. I think it bears saying that I’m a Mac user, and have been for going on 20 years now. Manufacturers are really out of excuses for not having any Mac specific support on their devices, especially ones that proudly trumpet their Mac support right on the box.

Having said that, I spent the majority of time trying to get the printer to see the network, the Macs to see the printer and the printer to see the paper. Unless the tray is absolutely packed with paper–begging for a jam–then the printer balks at any printing.

Thank goodness for Apple’s Bonjour, which allowed me to see the printer despite HP’s software ultimately failing to be helpful.

After the setup nightmare, which really isn’t any big deal when compared to most any printer you buy that isn’t an Epson, the print quality is good and fast. I’d love this printer more if the setup weren’t so mysterious. Ethernet is a nice feature at this price point, too. Good product, poor execution.
